"The stairs groaned and nearly puked two-by-fours as the two big men stamped up them. Me and Felix stood at the top of the stairs, looking down on them. It was like watching a golem and his pet boulder climb the stairs."

No, But I Read the Book

Atonement by Ian McEwan

On the hottest day in 1935, and on the brink of a world war, three children lose their innocence as the sweltering summer heat bears down and their lives are changed forever. Cecilia Tallis is of England's privileged class; Robbie Turner is the housekeeper's son. In their moment of intimate surrender, they are interrupted by Cecilia's hyper-imaginative and scheming 13-year-old sister, Briony. As chaos consumes the family, Briony commits a crime, the guilt of which she shall carry throughout her life. Atonement is a story with emotional intensity and a gripping plot, brilliant and utterly enthralling in its depiction of childhood, love, war, England, and class. The novel is a profoundly moving exploration of shame, forgiveness, and the difficulty of absolution.

While You Are Waiting

The Gatekeeper by James Byrne

I If you liked Lee Child's Jack Reacher, you should try The Gatekeeper by James Byrne. Like Reacher, Dez Limerick has a moral code, a tenacious will, and seemingly unbeatable physical prowess. Unlike Reacher, he also has a sense of humor. Both ex-soldiers have little patience for self-important blowhards. Built like a brick wall, Dez mows his way through bad guys in action scenes that make you want to cheer. Along the way there's a nefarious plot to uncover and then almost single-handedly try to foil. Byrne's direct style of writing makes the action and other sequences clearly flow. The Gatekeeper is the first; Dez appears again this month in the second of this great action series.
