City of Norwalk Celebrates Summer Meals Month
Mayor Rilling, Norwalk Health Department, Norwalk Public Schools, End Hunger CT!, and Local Community Food Providers Raise Awareness for Norwalk’s Summer Meal Program.
(NORWALK, Connecticut) – In honor of the recently declared Summer Meals Month, Mayor Rilling and the Norwalk Health Department partnered with Norwalk Public Schools, End Hunger Connecticut, and many local volunteers this past weekend to raise awareness about Norwalk’s Summer Meal Program.
The Summer Meal Program, federally funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered locally by Norwalk Public Schools, provides children 18 years of age and under with free, nutritious summer meals, no questions asked. This program offers a vital opportunity to reduce hunger, combat summertime food insecurity, and support overall health over the summer when school is not in session. Norwalk has 12 open meal sites serving free breakfast and lunch during the week now through mid-August.
This past weekend’s Summer Meal Blitz brought community organizations and volunteers together to show their support for this food access initiative and raise awareness by distributing information to homes and businesses near open meal sites. Since the start of the 2023 Summer Meal Program, Norwalk Public Schools has already served 6,100 breakfasts and 6,200 lunches. The City of Norwalk will continue raising community awareness of this vital food access opportunity for Norwalk families.
