City Of Stamford From The Mayor's Desk : May 13, 2022

From: City of Stamford
May 16, 2022

Words cannot fully capture the excitement and pride that I experienced while standing next to my colleagues on Wednesday as we announced that the recently passed state budget increases the state reimbursement for the Westhill High School project from 20% to 80%. That means the City of Stamford will receive $206.4 million in state funding for the Westhill project alone.

Not only that, but the state budget also increased the state school construction grant formula to 60% for future projects for the next 25 years.

This would not have been possible without the leadership of Senator Pat Billie Miller, who brought this funding across the finish line, and the rest of the Stamford delegation, as well as Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) and Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney (D-New Haven) who worked to ensure this was included in the budget legislation.

I also want to thank Dr. Lucero and her team for their partnership and advocacy throughout this process and their work each day to make Stamford public schools the best they can be for our students.

This increase in school construction funding will impact Stamford students, teachers, and staff for years to come and provide a modern and healthy learning environment that students deserve.

National Fentanyl Awareness Day

Tuesday was the first ever Fentanyl Awareness Day. The goal is to raise awareness of this substance that is claiming the lives of so many people around the country and Connecticut. Fentanyl is responsible for 85% of accidental overdose deaths in Connecticut. It is a legitimate prescription drug but one of the most common places fentanyl is appearing is in counterfeit prescription drugs. In response to the counterfeit pill crisis, Connecticut launched the You Think You Know public awareness campaign last fall. Federal Grant for Boccuzzi Park

I am proud to announce that the City of Stamford has been awarded over $1.81 million in federal funding through the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership grant program. This funding will go toward completing the phase II improvements at Boccuzzi Park, which will enhance the recreational amenities available to Stamford residents. I want to thank our federal delegation – Senator Chris Murphy, Senator Richard Blumenthal, and Representative Jim Himes – for their continued support and advocacy for funds and resources to advance equity and improve our parks, trails, and recreation opportunities.
