Art historians Carol Urick and Ernesto Gutierrez-Miravete present a live tour of the Austin House
The Austin House, a National Historic Landmark, is the largest object of the Wadsworth Atheneum’s collection and is the former West End home of the legendary and innovative A. Everett “Chick” Austin, Jr., the museum’s director from 1927 to 1944.
In the 1930s the Austin House was a gathering place for leaders of the international art world, where Austin and Helen entertained guests, including Salvador Dali, Alexander Calder, Gertrude Stein, George Balanchine, Le Corbusier, Cecil Beaton, Martha Graham, Agnes de Mille, Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson.
Tours of the Austin House are canceled until further notice, so this is your chance to see the unique architecture and design.

St. Patrick's Day Poetry

5:30pm at the Hodge Library (4 North St.)
Join your host Doug Winkel for a lively evening of Irish poetry read by a cast of talented local actors.
Special guest readers include Roxbury luminaries Ellen McCourt, Jack Gilpin, Jenny Schuck, Kimiye Corwin, and Jesse Liebman. All actors with experience on stage, television, and film, these readers bring life and emotion to the poems.
Doug Winkel, former Shepaug High School English teacher and theatre director will moderate informal discussions about each poem and help the audience explore, among other things, the poems’ forms and symbols, as well as the context and scope of each piece. Audience participation, input, and questions are encouraged!
From memories of the Irish countryside to the effect of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, you’ll be sure to discover something new about poetry on the Emerald Isle.
Festive refreshments will be served.
Seating is limited and will be on a first-come first-served basis.

"TO ARTISTS"
Matt Wood has a degree from the University of Iowa and started his business in 1996 creating murals, decorative finishes and commissioned artwork in homes and businesses from Maine to Florida. “I like to challenge myself” is how Wood explains his many outlets of artistic creation including the eloquent artwork in oil, charcoal drawing, and photography that will be on exhibit in the library's gallery.
Zachary Lytle has an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University and completed drawing and painting programs at the New York Studio School. His representational art was deeply influenced by European studies where he encountered works from the Northern Renaissance, a classical and yet deeply nuanced outgrowth of Medieval art. Taking the 15th Century style and seeing it from a fresh eye toward portraiture, Lytle adds another element, especially with his images that follow a subject in several guises.
