Join us for a fun- filled morning of fall-themed stories, rhymes, songs, and crafts. Weather permitting, we meet on the parachute next to the Buttons Garden and otherwise on the storytime rug in the children's library.

Spend Early Dismissal & Vacation Days at the Library!

What to do when school lets out early or is closed for a holiday and there are endless chores and errands to run, but your kids want to have some fun? Buddy up with another adult to bring your kids and their friends to the library. For early dismissal and most no-school-days this month, we have fun crafts planned for your kids and the whole family to enjoy. Check our event calendar for times and registration information.

Thankful Wind Spinners
Wednesday, November 8th at 2PM
Ages 5+

Fall is the perfect season to make this craft. You can add all the different things that you are thankful for this year in bright and bold colors, then sit back and watch them dance in the wind.

Celebrate Light!
Friday, November 10th at 2PM
Ages 5+

In light of honoring Veterans today, the clocks turning back and billions of people of the world celebrating Diwali this Sunday, the making of flower lanterns to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance seems the perfect early afternoon craft. Come by the library, wearing clothes that can withstand washable paint and create your very own guiding light just in time for the darker days arriving.

Paper Bag Turkey Puppets
Wednesday, November 22nd at 2PM
All ages

Join us for snacks and fun as we take traditional paper bag puppets to the next level with plenty of colorful feathers! Brainstorm what you're most thankful for this year, and write it on the front of the puppet. Then, all that's left to do is play with them! These turkeys can be folded and double as place cards for the Thanksgiving table for even more fun:)

Reading Buddies
Pre-K to 3rd grade

Designed to support young children with their reading, Reading Buddies pairs your child with a Hotchkiss School student to be the older "buddy," eager to help the younger child practice their reading. The idea and the hope for the emerging readers is that connecting with another, older "kid" is a treat in itself, and that reading aloud to a "kid" is low-pressure. At the same time, the student volunteer (age 12-18) serves as a reading mentor, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading difficulties. The buddy will ask questions about the text and have a basic understanding of assessing and helping with reading comprehension.

Younger readers can meet their older "buddy" in person on the Hotchkiss campus, over ZOOM or here at the library. Whatever is most convenient for you and your family!

Additionally this Fall, an eighth grade SCS student will be available at the Scoville Library for in person tutoring or reading help on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

Kindly complete this form to be paired with your "buddy" today and enjoy a mentorship program that has also resulted in many life long friendships!
