Families @ Scoville

Spend Early Dismissal & Vacation Days at the Library !

What to do when school lets out early or is closed for a holiday and there are endless chores and errands to run, but your kids want to have some fun? Buddy up with another adult to bring your kids and their friends to the library. For early dismissal and most no-school-days this month, we have fun crafts planned for your kids and the whole family to enjoy. Check our event calendar for times and registration information.

Craftsgiving: Take your table top decor to a new level with John Robshaw textile stamps!

Wednesday, November 22nd at 2PM

Ages 5+

Share in and bring home the warmth of the holiday season by creating one-of- a kind textile designs: table runners, placemats and cards for your Thanksgiving and upcoming family, holiday table. John Robshaw has kindly lent us an assortment of handmaid stamps to use, as well as decorative turbans to wear as we celebrate and create beautiful designs to use year after year! The textile dyes DO NOT wash out, so PLEASE DO wear appropriate clothing or coverage. The acrylic paints used for stamping on paper are washable.

Reading Buddies

Pre-K to 3rd grade

Designed to support young children with their reading, Reading Buddies pairs your child with a Hotchkiss School student to be the older "buddy," eager to help the younger child practice their reading. The idea and the hope for the emerging readers is that connecting with another, older "kid" is a treat in itself, and that reading aloud to a "kid" is low-pressure. At the same time, the student volunteer (age 12-18) serves as a reading mentor, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading difficulties. The buddy will ask questions about the text and have a basic understanding of assessing and helping with reading comprehension.

Younger readers can meet their older "buddy" in person on the Hotchkiss campus, over ZOOM or here at the library. Whatever is most convenient for you and your family!

Additionally this Fall, an eighth grade SCS student will be available at the Scoville Library for in person tutoring or reading help on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

Kindly complete this form to be paired with your "buddy" today and enjoy a mentorship program that has also resulted in many life long friendships!
