Advanced Poetry Writing Workshop
September 22, 2:00-4:00 pm, led by Sally Van Doren
In this immersive writing experience, we will strive to expand and develop our poetic voices using in-class prompts and discussion. By writing new poems in this constructive setting, we will find out how others hear us and how we can best hear ourselves. Registration priority is given to those who have participated previously.
An artist and prize-winning poet, Sally Van Doren is the author of four collections of poetry including "Sibilance," forthcoming from LSU Press September 27, 2023. She has taught poetry at the 92nd Street Y, Washington University, and the St. Louis Public Schools. She holds a BA from Princeton University and an MFA from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
An Evening With Local Author Tom Shachtman

Tom will read from and talk about his new novel Echoes, or The Insistence of Memory, and sign books at this event. The conversation will be led by Tom's friend and fellow author, Bruce McEver.
About the book: Ell, a millennial of European and Mexican heritage, has one humorous children’s book published, but her more serious writing projects are stalled, her boyfriend has dumped her, and she is deeply frightened by a recurring dream. To solve her problems, she delves into family mysteries—Civil War-era slaveholding, madness, and theft of artifacts. The key to all, previously unknown to Ell but remarkable, is a female Confederate warrior ancestor whose nightmare echoes her own.
About the Author: Tom Shachtman has written or co-authored forty books. His latest include the startlingly unconventional novel, The Memoir of the Minotaur (2020), and the third in his trilogy of histories about the Revolutionary Era, The Founding Fortunes (2020). The earlier books include How the French Saved America (2017) and Gentlemen Scientists and Revolutionaries (2014). His best-known earlier books are Rumspringa (2006), Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold (1999), and three books with FBI chief profiler Robert K. Ressler, including the international bestseller Whoever Fights Monsters. His earlier novels include Beachmaster, Wavebender, and Driftwhistler (1981-1985). He has also written documentaries for ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and the BBC, and has taught at New York University and lectured at Harvard, Stanford, Georgia Tech, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian's National History Museum.
