South Windsor’s archaeological record provides a window into the town’s rich Indigenous past. The town has been the site of not only intensive digs but of local of numerous surface finds. Rarely seen items are on display. Don't miss this exhibit.

Nowashe Fall Open House

Cheenulka Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag) will present an Indigenous food demonstration in Nowashe Village. Visitors can learn about Indigenous foods – their history and importance of eating locally sourced, in-season food. CheNulKa is an educator, activist, the shellfish manager for the First Light Shellfish Farm, and a member of  Red Hawk Singers and Dancers.

 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. David Eichelberg, Outreach and Tradition Specialist from the Mohegan Tribe, will be joining us to present on the Mohegan Tribe’s history, culture and traditions.

Albertus Jones: South Windsor Artist and Teacher Exhibit

A exhibit of paintings by local artist Albertus Jones will be on display throughout the building from September 21st thru October 26th  and will include paintings from the South Windsor Historical Society, The Wood, the South Windsor Public Library, First Congregational Church of South Windsor as well as several on loan from private collectors.

This exhibit is an accompaniment to the program, “Albertus Jones: South Windsor Artist and Teacher” w/speaker Gary Knobles to be held on September 28th from 7-8pm.

According to his WPA biography, Jones was, “Always a teacher. He believed that ‘his most important contribution to art was training other artists’”. He taught in virtually every art institution in Hartford and South Windsor.
Gary Knoble, a Trustee of the New Britain Museum of American Art and chair of their Collections Committee, will be bringing some works by Jones for the program.

Explore Indigenous Culture in Nowashe Village!  We will be hosting Clan Mother Shoran Piper (Golden Hill Paugussett), James Beard Award-winning Chef Sherry Pocknett (Mashpee Wampanoag), Dan Shears (Nulhegan Abenaki), and Sin Fronteras, a group of Indigenous musicians from South America.

Canoe trips provided by Metacomet Canoe & Kayak and authentic Northeast Indigenous cuisine offered by Sly Fox Den II will be available for paying customers. Pre-registration is recommended.

Many of our educators will also have Indigenous wares including wampum jewelry, available for purchase.

Suggested donation: $5 per child, $10 for adults, $25 per family.
