Microlibrary Warak Kayu
Semarang, Indonesia

The "microlibrary" Warak Kayu borders a city canal and the central square in Semarang, the capital of Central Java in Indonesia. Like a traditional ‘rumah panggung’ (house on stilts), the building is elevated and functions as both a library and community center. By elevating the library, a wide range of activities can be offered. On the ground, a large semi outdoor area can be used for workshops or presentations. Upstairs in the library itself, there is a net where kids can lie down, relax, and read but also directly communicate with parents and friends in the space underneath. Warak Kayu was the fifth microlibrary to be built in a series of microlibraries designed by the Rotterdam firm Shau. The libraries are part of an initiative to increase reading interest by creating multi-functional community spaces that serve low-income neighborhoods.

New World Trio: Performance of Chamber Music
Sunday, May 29, 4:00 p.m.

Please join us for a special Memorial Day weekend concert of chamber music by the New World Trio. For more than three decades, the New World Trio has brought the excitement and intimacy of chamber music to live audiences throughout New England. Founded in 1985 by violinist Anhared Stowe, New World presents wide-ranging concerts of both classical and contemporary chamber music works, performed with consummate artistry. Celebrating the richness and variety that can be gleaned from the chamber music repertoire, the program will incorporate carefully selected music from widely different sources. Part of their message is that many cultures and traditions make wonderful contributions to the human story and, underneath surface variations, there are powerful longings and deep sensibilities shared by all peoples.

New World has held residencies at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, the Hartt School, the Warner Theatre in Torrington, and St. John’s Episcopal Church.  In addition to live performances, New World was frequently featured on WNPR’s “Best of Connecticut Concert Hall Live” program.

Please register here for this free concert.

“…the three musicians of the New World combined together as one sound, potent and delectable.” - Hartford Courant

“….[New World Trio] has been an exemplar…it has been musically courageous.” Chamber Music America

Historically, May has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of older persons to our country. The Library is celebrating all month long by sharing the wisdom and advice of our older patrons. Visit here to listen to their answers to these questions: What do you think everyone should know about getting older? What advice would you give your younger self? What's next for you? If you are 65 or older and would like to share your thoughts, please contact Kelly Kandra Hughes at kkandrahughes@biblio.org.

During the month of May we also recognize the vast contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our country. In honor of the observance, consider reading books by Asian American and Pacific Islander authors. Click on the images below to find out more about recent titles we have on our shelves, and please come in to see our display!
