Town Of East Hartford - Threads of Assumption Art Exhibition

From: Town Of East Hartford
March 11, 2023

Join us at Raymond Library on Saturday, April 1 at 7 PM for an after-hours performance and reception to celebrate the installation of a month-long exhibition created in collaboration with the East Hartford community.

Threads of Assumption is an interactive art exhibition by Maria Finkelmeier, Martha Rettig, Sofie Hodara, and U-Meleni Mhlaba-Adebo. It surfaces interwoven experiences shaped by gender bias. Through interpretation and interrogation of both human stories and artificial intelligence (AI), we see, hear, and feel the effects of gender harm. The artists will be using new and disruptive tools, such as Chat GPT, to analyze and evaluate lived and computed gender bias, which will be realized in music and poetry.

The exhibition will include weavings created by the community during public workshops held at the library in November 2022 and February 2023. In these weavings, color is associated with the “where” and “how” participants have experienced gender bias. Exhibition visitors will be able to contribute to the narrative by weaving on a large-scale loom and inputting their data into a digital visualization.

This exhibition is made possible by funding from the Town of East Hartford. For more information about the artists and the Threads of Assumption project, prior iterations of which have been displayed in Boston and North Adams, Massachusetts, visit their website.

The Raymond Library is located at 840 Main St., East Hartford. Please note that library services will not be available during this after-hours performance. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. Register for a reminder on the library’s events calendar.
