Hello everyone,

Happy Friday! Wow, this month has flown! There is so much coming up, I do not know where to start.

First, I hope to see you tomorrow at the Apple Fest on the green! We will crown our Apple Fest King and Queen at 10AM and I hope you can all be there to show your support. The Helping Hands of the Senior Center will be handing out our calendars, chatting about the many activities and programs of the center, as well as selling handmade goods to benefit or enrichment fund. Our tent will be located near the bandstand, come visit!

Please take note of the yellow and blue highlighted items in this email, they will indicate new programs or events that are coming up soon.

BUS TRIP TO BOTANICAL GARDENS AND LUNCH ON ARTHUR AVE.

TICKETS GO ON SALE ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH

November 30th we will go to the NY Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show, then lunch at Arthur Ave.

Tickets are $138.00 and include the bus ride, tickets to the Botanical Gardens, Lunch on Arthur Ave, and gratuity for the bus driver and tour guide. CASH OR CHECK ONLY

Lastly, please be sure to sign in when you come into the center; this allows us to keep track of our programs but also to know who is in the building, and in case of an emergency we can locate you. If you are not sure how to use our computer screen to sign in, please come to the office, someone will be happy to show you.

TRIAD FOR SENIOR SAFETY PRESENTS: WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU CALL 911

Tuesday, September 27th, 10:00 AM New Milford TRIAD for Senior Safety is proud to welcome our very own New Milford Ambulance for an interactive presentation and conversation about what to expect when you call 911. An ambulance will be present to tour and check out up close in stressfree scenario with crew available for Q & A. Breakfast will be served following the program. REIKI HEALING Tuesday 27th, 1:00 3:00 PM Reiki is used to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and restore physical, mental, and emotional health through simple handson healing techniques with Reiki Master, MaryEllen Foster every second and fourth Tuesday of the month. A 10 minute Reiki Healing session is a suggested donation of $7.00 and

RIVER WALK WEDNESDAYS

9:30 AM

CALLING ALL WALKERS!- Join us for a nice walk along the Housatonic! The path is paved and flat which makes it perfect for all abilities. Park at the Senior Center and hop on the bus and we will take you there; bus leaves at 9:25AM. Or if you prefer to drive, meet us on Youngsfield Rd by the playground. Be sure to stop in to sign up! This is an independent group for our members, however, staff will happily join if time allows.

Hot and Humid conditions may cancel this walk, check in with the center before you head out or look at our Facebook page for cancelations.

How do I make my iPhone louder? Can my iPad let me read a book? How do I get music on my apple devices? Can I take photos and videos and send them to my friends and family? Join us as we welcome instructor, Lindsey Burk to help you become a Tech Savvy Senior! Bring your iPhone or iPad and learn how to use it more efficiently and discover things you had no idea it could do! Please note that you MUST own an iPhone or iPad for this class, it is not for any other devices and also bring/know your Apple ID and Password. Connect with the Senior Center to sign up.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: HADLOW PRESERVE Thursday, September 29th, 10:30 AM

9 Cozier Hill Rd

Sherman, CT The Northwest Land Conservancy has invited us to a guided hike at the Hadlow Preserve in Sherman: one of the region’s most beautiful spaces with scenic vistas. After a gentle climb to the top of the hill, you will be rewarded with beautiful views. This hike is about 1.5 miles. NCLC staff will guide the hike and share its special features. Transportation will be available, but seats are first come first serve by reservation. All participants must connect with the Senior Center prior to the hike to fill out your waiver.

JUKEBOX BINGO Friday, October 7th 1PM

Are you ready to play BINGO like you never had before?  Jukebox Bingo is a combination of "Name That Tune", "Music Trivia" and traditional Bingo. Instead of listening to numbers being drawn (B-1, I-17), you will be tapping your toes to the beat of music and filling out a bingo card to win prizes! The entrance fee is $5.00 per person at the door.

RENTER’S REBATE IS OPEN:

Application period: April 1st – October 1st

Eligibility Requirements: Must be age 65 or older or Social Security Disabled and rented in New Milford in the previous year (2021).

Income limit is $46,400 for married couples, $38,100 for a single person.

Documents required:

-Proof of last year’s income: Previous year’s tax return and Social Security 1099, or if did not file, all 1099 forms including SSA 1099. 

-Proof of rent and utilities paid in previous year via note from Landlord or payment records

ENERGY ASSISTANCE IS OPEN

"Energy Assistance is now open for 2022/2023 year. Qualifying income guidelines are as follows: $39,761 for individuals and $51,996 for couples. The total income must be below the above numbers to be eligible. Make sure you have all documents before coming in to apply. We will need your current income, such as: Social Security benefit, wages from work (previous 4 weeks worth of pay stubs), interest and/or dividends, etc. If you are self-employed, please call before you make an appointment to find out what you will need to bring. Whether you heat with electricity or not, we need a current electric bill. When all of your documents are ready, please connect with the Senior Center to schedule an appointment."

Medicare

Upcoming Medicare Open Enrollment You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Health Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) with or without drug coverage during these times:

Open Enrollment Period. From October 15 – December 7 each year, you can join, switch, or drop a plan. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7).
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. From January 1 – March 31 each year, if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or switch to Original Medicare (and join a separate Medicare drug plan) once during this time. Note: You can only switch plans once during this period.

Come have lunch with us!

The Community Culinary School of Northwestern CT serves lunch Monday - Thursday at 12:00 PM and there is a suggested donation of $4.00. Come on in for a program then stay for lunch or pick up to take home to enjoy! Please note that the menu is always posted in the monthly newsletter.

Sign up in person, on our Touch Screen, or by phone, at least 3 days in advance!

Chef Jay has placed a suggestion box on the lunch table! Your feedback is important and valued. Please take the time to write down what you love, what you do not love, some suggestions, share a recipe, what you would like to see, or even a recipe you would like to share.

Senior Bus Transportation

If you live in New Milford, Gaylordsville or Northville and need transportation to come to the center, go shopping or go to a friend’s house? All you have to do is give us a call a few days ahead of time to get on our bus schedule. Call us at 860-355-6075 to schedule your ride and meet our fantastic bus drivers, Erin and Tom.

The Lunch Bunch is back and meets one Saturday a month to enjoy a new or favorite area restaurant. Join in for delicious local fare and friendships! Connect with the Senior Center for contact information.
