Beardsley Park was created, in part, by a donation to the City of 100 acres of land from cattle dealer James Beardsley in 1878. In 1884 the City contracted with renowned landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted to create a plan for the space. In 1920, Parks Commissioner Wesley Hayes began a campaign to create a zoo in the Park. This Zoo is Connecticut's only zoo, and features a carousel, a lovely greenhouse, and many fascinating exhibits.
